Led by Art on Purpose teaching artist Rikeisha Hawkins, assisted by high schoolers from Baltimore Freedom Academy, Art Leadership workshops meet with Afya Public Charter School middle schoolers once a week throughout the year. The Afya program is supported through our partnership with Belair-Edison Healthy Coalition.
Art on Purpose's Art Leadership Program is funded by the Abell Foundation, Goldsmith Family Foundation, Target, and Thalheimer Foundation, and through the support of our partner schools. The Dream World exhibition is sponsored by Suzanne F. Cohen.
Middle school students learn basic color theory, drawing, and composition skills, before moving on to create original paintings on the theme of Dream World.
For our Afya School participants, we seek to encourage art-making as a means of personal expression; for our high school mentors, the Afya program is an opportunity to develop teaching and leadership skills.
