Art

Four week-long exhibitions include works from Art on Purpose's Listening Station project and contributions from community arts organizations Kids on the Hill, Wide Angle Youth Media, and Youthlight with art by students from Baltimore Freedom Academy, Crossroads School, and Learning Inc.

Schedule of exhibitions is as follows:

Rotation 1: Hear a Story, Share a Story
May 20—24
During spring 2008, Art on Purpose collected dozens of written postcards at libraries, colleges, farmers markets, and community events responding to Beth Barbush’s and Yutaka Houlette’s Speaking of Silence audio-portraits, a series of short pieces powerfully conveying experiences of Baltimoreans confronting drug recovery, homelessness, and other challenging situations. Postcards and audio portraits are featured in the exhibition, and visitors will be invited to add their own responses.

Rotation 2: Baltimore Freedom Academy & Wide Angle Youth Media
May 27—31
High school students from Art on Purpose’s ongoing art leadership program at Baltimore Freedom Academy and young people from Wide Angle Youth Media jointly present an exhibition of their own art alongside selections from Wide Angle Youth Media’s recently completed Youth Media Festival.

Rotation 3: Crossroads School & Youthlight
June 3—7
Young people participating in Youthlight afterschool photography and media literacy workshops and middle school students from Crossroads School create imagery with masks using photography and mixed media/collage. The exhibition includes recorded audio critiques of the participants discussing one another’s work.

Rotation 4: Kids on the Hill & Learning Inc.
June 10—15
Students from Learning Inc. and young people from Kids on Hill, an organization dedicated to art action for social change, create animation and video work within their separate programs and then offer one another video critiques.

Purpose

A series of exhibitions focusing on how and why using and listening to voice can be empowering.
